Plan International Bangladesh and Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF), under the EU-funded Swadhinata Project, convened a national seminar on 31 August at InterContinental Dhaka to strengthen support and referral mechanisms for journalists, activists, and human rights defenders (HRDs) in Bangladesh. As the research partner, the Centre for Research and Development (CRD) presented study findings on existing support services, help-seeking needs, and key challenges, along with proposed referral models to ensure timely and coordinated assistance. The seminar featured remarks from Chief Guest Mr. Zahir Uddin Swapan, MP and Political Advisor to the Honorable Prime Minister of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, who highlighted AI-related risks and the importance of factchecking, while Ms. Baiba Zarina from the EU Delegation called for better integration of support services so that journalists and HRDs do not have to face risks alone. Mr. Faruq Wasif of the Press Institute of Bangladesh recommended including fact-checkers in the referral system, and Ms. Kabita Bose, Country Director of Plan International Bangladesh, emphasized the need for responsible technology use and digital safety. Ms. Shaheen Anam, Executive Director of MJF, stressed that both government accountability and citizen feedback are essential, adding that NGOs must continuously engage with authorities to assess and improve the referral pathway. The seminar brought together government, civil society, media, and development stakeholders to advance a more coordinated and responsive support ecosystem in Bangladesh.
