Baseline Study of "Protection and Education in Emergencies for Rohingya and host community children and adolescent girls and boys in Cox’s Bazar"

Since the escalation of violent conflicts in the early 2017s, Rohingya have fled the country and sought refuge in neighbouring countries, and in the biggest numbers, in Bangladesh. As the refugees – almost 60 per cent of whom were children – poured across the border from Myanmar into Bangladesh, they brought with them accounts of the unspeakable violence and brutality that had forced them to flee (UNICEF, 2021). Living in densely populated refugee camps, Rohingya children receive very limited access to education and are exceptionally vulnerable to illnesses, violence and trafficking. Children, particularly girls, are more vulnerable to violence and human trafficking, both for sex and manual labor (CODEC, Save The Children, Tai & UNHCR, 2017). Therefore, child protection interventions are essential to Rohingya and surrounding HCs as both communities are at risk of separation, trafficking and exploitation as child labor as well as being denied their right to schooling. To advance fair and impartial social orders that ensure children’s rights and prosperity, Educo Bangladesh has been working with children and their communities since 1999. Prior to this mission, Educo Bangladesh has been awarded a grant from Spanish development corporation (AECID) for implementing a project titled “Protection and Education in Emergencies for Rohingya and host community children and adolescent girls and boys in Cox’s Bazar”. The project is aiming to strengthen protection and education while fostering the well-being of children and adolescents in Rohingya refugees and host communities in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.

To compliment that the project aims to conduct a baseline study to implement the project efficiently based on the baseline value/status of the outcome and result level indicators of the logical framework, and finally determine the need of the target groups in line with project objectives and interventions.  

CRD has been leading the baseline study. The objective of the study is to ensure gender-positive protection and quality education for children and adolescents facing life-threatening risks of abuse, neglect, exploitation, GBV and severe distress, in 3 Camps (8E,14&17) and associated host communities in Cox’s Bazar.
